SENEGAL, January 2020

Our trip focuses on the arid Sahel and Sudan Savanna typical of Senegal north of the River Gambia, although we also will spend a few days in prime Guinea Savanna forest in the southeastern corner of the country. We will see a good variety of species not normally encountered in The Gambia, which is much more frequently birded than Senegal. Such species include Arabian Bustard, Quail-plover, Lappet-faced Vulture, Scissor-tailed Kite (1000s of birds at a communal roost), Lesser Kestrel, Adamawa Turtle Dove, Blue-naped Mousebird, Little Gray Woodpecker, Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark, African Stone Chat, Black-eared Wheatear, Black Scrub Robin, Blue Rock Thrush, Yellow-bellied Eremomela, Desert Cisticola, River Prinia, Cricket Longtail, Fulvous Babbler, Sennar Penduline Tit, Neumann’s Starling, Zebra Waxbill, and Mali Firefinch. Too, we will take in the large number of waterbirds overwintering at Djoudj National Park and boat on the upper River Gambia near Niokolo-Koba National Park, where African Finfoot, Egyptian Plover, and Pel’s Fishing-Owl can be seen at close range. We should see more than 300 species of birds on this trip.
