VAGRANTS

The 78 species in red font either were classified as vagrants (i.e., nine or fewer accepted records for the state) in Birds of Montana (BOM), or had not been documented in the state when Birds of Montana went to press (Mexican Duck, Stejneger's Scoter, Mexican Violetear, Rivoli’s Hummingbird, Pacific Golden-Plover, Ruff, Wood Sandpiper, Ivory Gull, Heermann’s Gull, Neotropic Cormorant, Tricolored Heron, Black Vulture, Cassin's Sparrow, Scott's Oriole, Eurasian Tree Sparrow). Here, we provide a tally of the number of accepted records for each of these vagrants and information on the date and observer for each record that was accepted after BOM appeared in print. Note that six species that were treated as vagrants in BOM have now been documented more than nine times, and thus are no longer classified as vagrants, owing to new records since the book appeared (Snowy Plover, Glossy Ibis, Brambling, Hooded Warbler, Pine Warbler, Summer Tanager). We will keep this list updated as new records of vagrants are accepted by the Montana Bird Records Committee.
